Father’s Day Revelations…

Today is a celebration of fathers everywhere… I celebrate my father…although he passed on in 1978…

Last night I read all of the letters and cards he had sent to me…and remembered him, as well as where I was in my growth and development at those times.  I missed my dad.  He was a good father…He and my mom separated when I was seven…but I still loved him…and he was still, my dad…

As I grew up, I came to realize certain dynamics of human nature…while love may last forever…relationships may not…casualties presented themselves everywhere…and no one was safe from the fallout…and if we sought answers, we could seek and find with the wisdom of our understanding…

Dad would come out to visit us five children, every summer…until my sister and I decided after attending an early summer concert, that we would try to hook up with our favorite group, and took a journey to their hotel, once we managed to get the information from one of their stage crew… We were offered a ride to the hotel by the guy who was transporting their instruments and staging to the airport…we accepted, and he dropped us off in front of the hotel and waited… of course, the front desk personnel denied that the group was staying there…so  the equipment guy took us as far as he was going after dropping off the equipment to LAX, which was Los Angeles, near our grandmother’s home, near USC…we were given a ride from there to our home in the San Fernando Valley, whereas night, had become early morning… foolish, naive, young girls…Angels, everywhere!

We made it into the house…thinking we could sneak into bed, and there in the living room stood my father, my mom, and my aunt…”Where have you been!!!” My mother shouted.  My dad just stood there silently.  After we explained our escapade, mom angrily explained the dangers our little adventure had exposed us to, and we were grounded, and forbidden to go to any more concerts that summer!  My dad finally spoke, saying he was not coming for any more summer visits…that his next visit would be when we graduated from high school, which was three years away!

Mom did consent to allowing me and my sister to attend our favorite group’s concert two months later, where we did meet them, and we asked them about the hotel, and they said they were there!!! Silly young girls…

After my 19th birthday, my letters became calls to my dad…we would talk on the phone every other weekend, and he was always happy and had a story to tell me about the concerts he had gone to, and what was going on around him with the relatives and such! We shared good laughs, and we shared the love…

My dad passed away at 50 years…He died in his sleep of a heart attack.

I think back on all the wonderful things my dad taught me…He taught me about diversity and friendship…through his diverse group of friends and their friendships… He taught me how to love baseball…he taught me how to appreciate and love music…Dad loved a variety of music, especially the R&B greats, and played the saxophone…he taught me how to enjoy good food, by being a great cook…which I inherited from him..(and my mom!)  He opened the door to my spiritual journey…which evolved from my Catholic beginnings to my spiritual path today…

Whatever your relationship may be with your dad…embrace it…honor it…appreciate it…because good, not so good, or indifferent, we are all the better for it…really, we are.

To all the dads who were taken…they are heroes, and they left behind legacies of their own, which will endure, and last a lifetime…

To those dads who are doing their best…you are commended…

To those dads who can do better…be better…someone is reading your book…

To “Step in” dads, and dads who have no biological children, and are dads to many… you are the salt of the earth…

And to those dads who are loving it to the last drop…you are golden!

Above all, dads everywhere…Today is your day to shine, and be appreciated…Thank you for your love…direction and support…and for always being there…

E.A., you’re the best dad ever! And I’ll love you…forever…Kisses N hugs….

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY, to dads, everywhere… SJB, Jr., Uncle J.B.

Much Love….

Juneteenth…

via Juneteenth…

Quote

Juneteenth…

“Juneteenth” is described as  “a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States… Celebrated annually on the 19th of June throughout the United States.

The significance…Emancipation of the last remaining enslaved African Americans in the Confederacy…

Juneteenth is also know as Freedom Day…Jubilee Day…Liberation Day…Emancipation Day…

Freedom means having the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance…

Jubilee is a special anniversary of an event, especially one celebrating twenty-five or fifty years of a reign or activity…

Liberation is the act of setting someone free from imprisonment, slavery, or oppression; release…

Emancipation is the fact or process of being set free from legal, social, or political restrictions; liberation…

Today, I’m thinking about the 1,653 Black people who died at the hands of police in America between 2014 and 2019, just to pull up the numbers…however, these killings including those by private citizens who are not of color…have been going on since Slavery began in America… 2020 has continued the horrific practice of taking Black lives…

Today, I’m thinking about Rayshard Brooks, 27…George Floyd, 46…Breonna Taylor, 26…Atatiana Jefferson, 28…Aura Rosser, 40…Stephon Clark, 22…Botham Jean, 26…Philando Castille, 32…Alton Sterling, 37…Michelle Cusseaux, 50…Freddie Gray, 25…Janisha Fonville, 20…Eric Garner, 43…Akai Gurley, 28…Gabriella, Nevarez, 22…Tamir Rice, 12…Michael Brown, Jr., 18…Tanisha Anderson, 37…Robert Fuller, 24…Malcolm Harsch, 38…Ahmaud Arbery, 25…Now Google and Wikipedia pages outlining the details of lives cut short for being Black…in America…

Juneteenth…Maybe someone forgot to tell those who took their lives…that they were free…that they were liberated…that they were emancipated…about three centuries ago…

Let us celebrate Juneteenth today…Praying…that one day, in the very, very near future…we can celebrate the true meaning of Juneteenth.

Passage…

There is a beautiful and powerful legacy of love given to humanity that we have not even began to scratch the surface thereof…

Our preference to exercise fear over understanding…holds our hearts back from the true and real experience and expression of Love…to one another, as well and foremost, to our fellow humans…

If we only have love…if we’d only believe in its power of transformation…George Floyd would still be with us, living his life today…along with those who shared his fate…instead, they fell victims to those who chose to forgo the gift of love and the immensity of its transformative power and reach…

There would be no distinctions made in our Diversity…Every life would be precious…and hold meaning to everyone…regardless of  likeness or similarities...with only the knowledge that all life is precious and sacred, and all life must be protected…nurtured…and loved.

We deny ourselves the gift of life, any and every time we deny anyone the right to the gift of their lives…in any shape, form or fashion…and ultimately, we negate the sacrifice made to ensure that we have the right to life on this planet…and when we make that transition to the next life…which is guaranteed everlasting… How we gain that gift, is the key to our understanding and surrender to love…Right here…Right NOW.  The Promise…the Sacrifice…came with the clear understanding of Passage…

The Passage is the ticket to Eternity… If we do not understand the road of Passage…there is no Eternity…

Love is The Passage and the key to Eternity…There is no other way.  Nothing can be bartered, negotiated or substituted… There is only one Way…

We must lay down our weapons of Fear…

We must stop hurting others…and ourselves, and hurling obstacles in our paths in our refusal to accept the knowledge of, and exercise the gift and transformational power of Love…

Hatred…Racism…Discrimination…Prejudice…Greed…Injustice…Lies…Deception…Inequality…Malice…Inhumanity…any evil present or practiced, will fall away forever…in the presence and practice of Love…

Love is the Power of Creation and the only energy that is Omnipotent…

Once this understanding is reached by all humankind…the Way of Passage…becomes the Way of Life…securing Eternity…forever.

Let us secure Tomorrow…Today.  Lay down your hearts to Love…

Surrender…Let the transformation begin and experience the unity of “One Heart…One Love.”

Remove the cloaks of Fear…and Surrender…

Passage…is LOVE….

January 14, 1979…

January 14, 1979…That’s the day I lost my brother and my best friend…

Let It Fall: Los Angeles 1982-1992, a program on television tonight, took a look at the decade leading up to the L.A. riots of 1992.  The documentary also examined the racial tensions of the time, along with  the rise of gangs, the crack epidemic, and the way the LAPD chose to clamp down on the violence…

Watching this documentary, after living through some of the events in prelude to the riots, sent me a most clear realization of how to address some of the inquiries of what to do to help in the process of healing, police reform, and racism dismantling in the minds and hearts of those most vulnerable to this disease…Listen and Watch…and absorb the history of Black America…through their pain, struggles and losses…

These are stories that must be told…by those who have lived through the injustices…in order to give life to these horrific incidents…so the viewers can live vicariously through those left behind to endure the pain of loss and continued injustices visited upon one…just because of the color of their skin…Walk a mile in their shoes…Change begins when you fully understand the need for change…become the experience…and awaken to become an advocate of Change…

With this revelation, I would like to share with you a letter written by my mother to the ACLU in New Orleans, Louisiana,  Dated February 27, 1979…appealing for their assistance in obtaining justice for the murder of her son….

Dear Reviewing Attorney,

My name is Gerlene M. Bangs Tate, and I am a Supervising Child Support Investigator with the Los Angeles District Attorney, Bureau of Child Support Operations.  I was referred to your office by the Los Angeles ACLU.

On January 14, 1979, in New Orleans, LA, My son, Stanley Joseph Bangs, born April 12, 1953, was shot and killed by the New Orleans police.

I first heard of the incident early Sunday morning…January 14, by my ex-sister in law, who lives here in North Hollywood…I was informed that I would have to come down to get the body released for burial.

Upon arriving in New Orleans January 16, I commenced to take care of business.  I was told by a relative, that I was to contact a Sgt. Gavin-Robbery Division…I never did talk or see him…but after numerous round arounds, I was interviewed by a  Sgt. Wayne H. Cooper-Homicide Division, who related the circumstances as follows:

The officers were called on a disturbance call by a family member to the residence.  Upon arriving, the officers were shown where my son had taken flight to the Mississippi River levee…The officers went to the foot or bottom of the levee and called to my son to come down, subsequently after throwing concrete at the police car, he ran down past the police car approximately 100 ft., turned around with both hands in the air, but still clutching two big pieces of concrete in each hand, approached the officers, they shot off a warning shot, and since he was right upon the officers, the second shot was in his chest…

Something made me ask Sgt. Cooper, “Are you sure they didn’t shoot him in the back?” He vehemently replied, “Oh, no.” I also asked if the officers had been aware of Stanley’s emotional state, would the officers have handled the situation differently.  He stated, “I doubt it.”

Enclosed is a copy of the death certificate showing death was caused due to two (2) gunshot wounds of the back.  This is so opposite to the information given that I feel very deeply that this matter certainly merits investigation, and most probably merits legal action on behalf of me, his sisters and brothers.

My son is dead.  He was a deeply troubled young man, immature in a lot of ways, and was emotional at times, but he was my son and I loved him.

The officers unknowing to me at the time of Sgt. Cooper’s “taped” interview with me had been advised of my son’s emotional and mental state, by his aunt, and they were concerned for his safety because he was not familiar with the area, therefore, being forewarned and being made aware of the situation they could have been able to deal effectively with him, without killing him in what seems to have been a wanton killing…

I plead with you to accept this case.  True it won’t bring my son back, but it may help to protect the rights and lives of other potential victims of hasty, police “justice!”

The police of New Orleans would not give me a police report, nor give me my son’s wallet and clothes he was murdered in…Sgt. Cooper informed me that I wouldn’t get them unless I got an attorney to get them.

I guarantee that if you accept this case, I will fully cooperate with you. Thanking you for consideration and a reply.

Very truly yours,

Mrs. Gerlene M. Bangs Tate

Three days before my brother left for New Orleans, we had a talk…He was at a crossroads in his life, and he wanted to visit relatives in Louisiana to clear his thoughts and decide what he wanted to do with his life…He was taking some college courses, school was out, and he wanted to formulate a plan for his future.

Whenever he made decisions or was troubled about something, or needed objectivity, he would call me or come see me to talk things out, or let me know of his plans…my brother was very loving and sensitive…he couldn’t understand how mom and dad could separate, if they loved each other…

The New Orleans police tried to push a “stereotypical”  defense in killing my brother…He was going to harm them with concrete, while running away from them! Sounds all too familiar…

Fast forward…

Rodney King received a beating within inches of his life…because he was “high on PCP.” Although when tested once at the hospital…there were no traces of “PCP” in his system.  His only crime was being born Black…George Floyd…crime…being born Black…Rayshard Brooks…crime…being born Black…Trayvon Martin…Amadou Diallo…Kenneth Chamberlin…Jonathan Ferrell…Eric Garner…Philando Castile…Breonna Taylor…Alton Sterling…Stanley J. Bangs…and it goes on and on and on and on and on…

Stop…look…listen…become…understand…Change…Change…CHANGE!!!

No one is born a Racist…Teach the children well…so that they will remember acceptance and appreciation…and embrace and delight in diversity…

Dates of death because of the color of one’s skin…should not be a “remembrance.”

Change your shoes…and take a walk….

19 Days Later…Here We Are…Again!

Flag Day…19 days later…

Something is extremely wrong with this picture…19 days after the murder in Minnesota of George Floyd, by a police officer, as three of his colleagues stood by and callously watched; we witness another murder of a young Black man, Rayshard Brooks, 27, in Atlanta, Georgia, by a police officer…Rayshard was shot twice in the back, as he was running away from two police officers, trying to arrest him…

Shot…twice in the back…running away from them…unarmed. My brother…all over again!!! How many more Black lives will be taken before police reform is initiated across America, and Racism is dismantled
in the hearts and minds of those who look upon people of color…as less than human…when the origin of life of every human being on this planet…began and came out of Africa! One race…which calls itself the human race…originated in Africa…again, I say it!!!

Can one wipe out the life from which they came?! Can one tear out the heart of their mother? Can one take away the breath of another…because they don’t know their brother or sister…because your brother and sister don’t look like you? Behold the hearts and minds entrenched and indoctrinated and immersed in Racism…

This evil that is embraced and continually taught to generations…will put an end to all human life…before change can be initiated, accepted and implemented…this horrific legacy must be eradicated now…or future generations will be destroyed before they have the opportunity to live in peace and freedom…regardless of whom does or doesn’t look like whom…

Start teaching “humanity” instead of racism… Feed your children…and your children’s children about the beauty of diversity…with love and appreciation of the fact that all people…especially people who don’t look like you…deserve life…and the breath of life….

Teach them that we are all one race of people…that we are all related to one another…and when a Black man or woman is felled by policemen’s bullets and brutality…or by a private citizen who believes they are privileged and above the law for doing the same thing…remind them…that they have taken someone related to them…that they have released a mother’s cry to forever be reverberated throughout the heavens with a pain that can never be imagined… that their hatred and racism has torn another gaping hole in the fabric of humanity…then imagine…if the world were different…and it was your child…and they faced the same fate…because of the color of their skin…Just imagine… Look back at this country’s history of Black America…What if…You were Black America???

It only takes a moment to change your heart…to commit to change centuries of inequality and injustice…look in the mirror…and begin…with your next breath…

This country can not afford another 19 days from June 12th in Atlanta…for another son or daughter of color to be murdered in the name of racism…and police misconduct.

America is hanging…by a thread…a thread called Racism….

Think Outside of Yourself….

Today I went out to run some shopping errands…I was in a general merchandise retailer, shopping for specific food items I could only get there… I was standing there trying to make a choice between two items when I was approached by two women talking and pushing their cart in my direction… I looked up and one had on a mask, and the other had her mask pulled down under her chin, talking across to the other woman…

Rather than excuse themselves to let me know they wanted to get something very close to me, so I could allow them to enter into my space,  by backing up and practicing social distancing while they made their choices, they just walked up within inches of me and took items off the shelf where I stood, and didn’t back away to keep the six inches of required social distancing, posted on top of every shelf, spacing the distance for customers!

”So much for “social distancing,” I said to them.    The older of the two looked at me as if I’d spoken a foul word…and the other, who was younger, maybe mid to late twenties, said, “I’m a scientist, I’m not worried about it.” I replied, “You should be.” “I’m not.” She said. “I know what’s really going on…”

So I replied, “You’re a scientist? Then tell me what you know so I can know what you know.”

In a nutshell, she explained how the virus affected two percent of the population, whereas the flu virus affected three percent of the population…she went on to say that it was a “money” thing, because where she worked, they laid off many scientists so it would affect the research and the making of money for a vaccine…she summed up by saying it wasn’t as serious as everyone thinks…and she wasn’t worried about it, or possibly being infected by it… and she stays most of the time, in the house!

Isn’t “isolating” a form of social distancing ? Isn’t that a big reason why this virus was being held at bay, and a good possibility as to why she was unaffected so far?

Well, it turned out these ladies were mother and daughter…and her mother said, “Well, I’m old, I work in a hospital as a case manager, I wear my mask all day…and I’m scared.”

After telling her she wasn’t “old,” I did say that I was “old” as well, and her daughter could be my daughter, if I had one. Then I said, “As a matter-of-fact, you ARE my daughter, and I would say to you, you can believe as you want, but practice social distancing…for the others you come into contact with.”  I told her that I wear my mask not only for my protection…but for her protection as well…Anyone can be asymptomatic…

I continued my lecture to her, and her mother nodded and commented in agreement.  All young people know all and can solve all world problems…including their own…they are fearless…and the world is going to know their names! How familiar that sounds to most of us…

They may change the world and someday cure physical diseases, and social diseases such as racism, hatred, prejudice and discrimination…however, until then…practice common sense and safety during this pandemic…be safe for others…wear masks and practice social distancing…even if you believe you are invincible…

Think Outside of Yourself…it is your responsibility to be responsible during this crucial time in our history of surviving a health crisis that hovers over the planet at this time.

No one is immune…reinfection can occur…asymptomatic carriers are walking time-bombs to many…

Please be vigilant…practice the required safety measures…if not for concern for yourselves…practice for the concern and safety of others…and you will be doing a great service to yourself, and others.

Our daily lives have never known the compound fractures and breaks which are cropping up everywhere…all over…in various and precarious situations endangering everyone…some more than others…in all walks and positions…and stations in life…be kind…be caring…be watchful…show compassion…lead with humility…be the ever Good Samaritan…

Now…more than ever…Think Outside of Yourself…

A life may depend on it…and it may be yours….

A Path To Peace…

A Path To Peace…Can we find it? Is there such a thing? And when we find it, will we find passage on the path to begin the journey?

The Path To Peace…is right in front of us…it’s overgrown with brambles of hatred…injustice…deception…lies…discrimination…prejudice…greed…racism…selfishness…unrighteousness…centuries of man’s inhumanity to his fellow man…these brambles are thickets of endless egregious acts…

Can a path ever be cleared to begin the forgiveness and healing that will summons a preamble to Peace…for all?

Our country’s history towards diversity has never been one of welcome…down to the treatment of our brothers and sisters indigenous to America…

A Path To Peace…is crucial to the survival of this Nation…as a path is cleared…we will experience the pain of contact with the many thorns lining the prickly shrubs and vines to be cut down and hauled away… in preparation for our journey to peace…

Are you ready for this journey? This path has been hidden from view far too long…

Put on your gloves if you must…Your spade of love is calling…

Birthday Reflections…

June 1st is the day I came into being six decades and 6 years ago…There are many chapters which fill the six, and nearly half volumes of my life… There have been many adventures…romances…fiction…nonfiction…fantasy…science fiction…mysteries…travels…novels…history…poetry…drama…drama…and more drama!

Reflecting on what’s happening in our world today…a pandemic that projects science fiction proportions…and a country in further crisis by an administration based on fiction…and drama…drama…and more drama…

I constantly ask myself, “How did we get here?! How did we as a people, come to this pace of utter spiritual bankruptcy and human deprivation? How did “civilization” degress to such a potpourri of chaos and decay?

I grew up in the sixties…the decade of Love…I always believed that the world was on its way to becoming better…I guess I allowed my my rose-colored glasses to become more factual than the fashionable accessory they were meant to be…

I have seen and experienced horrors and tragedies…and rather than give in to the darkness of the moments and occasions…I’ve worked at using them to understand…persevere…grow…educate…relate…and translate these life changing episodes into levels of enlightenment…one must never let life become too heavy as to crush you…under what comes your way…Nor let your heart become cold, hard and embittered at what may confront you on your journey through life…

While I have seen and experienced much…I have not experienced all…and most likely, never will…

As long as I am still here, it is my intention to live for love…to live to give love…to live to experience more love…to live and show by example, that love is…and always will be the key…to a life well spent…My “Better Blessed” is Love….

What I have managed to learn in my short time upon this planet…is that life is precious…and there are those who are far too concentrated on destroying life…by destroying love…

We are all children of Love…We are all children of the Universe…We are all Children of God…The Force…Buddha…Allah…Jehovah…Yahweh…Love…

The next time you come across…or see anything or anyone…out of step with love…sow your seeds of love upon that troubled place or soul…

Birthday Reflections belong to all of us…we must reflect upon our lives and how we are living…and what we are giving…to make ourselves and our world…blessed and better…for everyone…everyday…and if that is too much…to make it an everyday thing… reflect on your birthday…it will give you a perspective on life, like no other…

My birthday wish…is for everyone…everywhere…to take a moment…start small, and increase each day, in becoming the best of yourselves with love…and giving love…and watching out for one another…in the name of love…no matter who they are and especially if they do not look like you…

We are all a part of the human family…whether we like it or not…whether we care to be…or not. Nothing in this universe can change that…so stop trying…give in to Love…

2000 years ago, One gave His Life…in the name of Love…to save a race…The Human Race….Birthday Reflections will allow you to see yourself…Let that reflection be Love….

Happy Birthday….to you…..
